Millions of people have viewed footage of 'levitating' manhole covers in a New Orleans neighborhood.
Seeing manhole covers rising up and jiggling about might seem like an amusing novelty, but for residents of New Orleans, the phenomenon has been met with concern and trepidation.

The reason for this is that a similar event occurred during Hurricane Katrina, when manhole covers were lifted into the air due to catastrophic flooding that caused immeasurable devastation, leaving more than 1,400 people dead and 300,000 homes destroyed.

The new clip, which has been viewed over 7 million times, is accompanied by the text:

"Those old New Orleans spirits were making the manhole covers dance!"

In reality, the moving manhole covers don't necessarily mean that there is a major flood - in some cases heavy rain on its own can cause hydraulic pressure to build up in the drainage system.
Even so, some locals believe that the phenomenon is a warning.

"In our culture, we believe nature gives us signs," resident Marie Johnson told HypeFresh.

"These videos remind me of stories my grandparents used to tell."

You can check out the clip for yourself below.

A large, continuous surge of water in the system would cause the air trapped underneath the manhole cover to compress. That compression leads to an increase in pressure which generates enough force to lift the manhole covers, F=P/A.

You would think adding a few holes to the covers would solve the problem.

Because these manholes are heavy you would think you'd need a strong airflow to levitate them like that. But the grass is undisturbed. So something is wrong here...

Look at the grass/weeds close to the cover on the right at around 9-10 seconds.  I think the reason the grass is mostly still is the height of the lids.

Something looks fake there. I mean manhole cover movement is one thing , but that kind of movement looks fishy.

It could be a hoax but it could also be down to suddenly increased air flow at a varying rate.

The grass is undisturbed because it's not airflow outside that is causing the manholes to "dance." It's the hydraulic pressure underneath the manhole cover that is doing this.

Indeed, adding small holes is one way to mitigate the problem and relieve the hydraulic pressure. It's how we design our manhole covers in my area. The City of New Orleans can learn a thing or two...

Are you sure about that?  The example you've chosen is literally 50% holes.   I always supposed the holes are to insert a tool to remove the heavy metal cover?   But it's never been high on my list of stuff I think hard about (top twenty at best), so if I'm wrong - meh.

Yep correct, the holes are for inserting tools and also for relieving pressure. It's a 2-in-1 combo! If we were to design holes only for inserting tools, then 4 holes equally spaced around the cover would be sufficient for access in all directions. The extra holes mainly help with relieving pressure.
